symptoms of withdrawal: h/a, fatigue, yawning, nausea, irritability caffeine
treatment for withdrawal: methadone, 3 mo-1 yr in patient, long-term outpatient amphetamines
s/s of use: delusions, euphoria, dilated/constricted pupils, nystagmus, violence PCP
s/s of overdose: prolonged effects and episodes, anxiety, panic, confusion, blurred vision, increase in bp & temp PCP
neurotransmitter involved is serotonin; these drugs increase the release creating euphoria; if taking SSRIs this patient is at risk for serotonin syndrome & death. MDMA "ecstasy", MDA, MDEA, Ketamine and PCP

s/s of usage: acne, slight stimulation, decreased inhibition, LOC, slurred speech, ilusions, drowsiness, n/v, suffocation inhalants
irreversible health problems r/t abuse of inhalants heart failure, diffuse abnormalities in white brain matter
reversible health problems r/t abuse of inhalants liver/kidney impairment, blood oxygen depletion
taking multiple doses of anabolic steroids over a period of time, stopping, then starting again cycling
combination of several types of steroids to maximize effectiveness stacking
starts with low doses of stacked drugs, gradually increases then gradually decreases pyramiding
s/s of use: oily skin, acne, peripheral edem, jaundice, quick muscle and weight gain, purple or red spots on the body, increased injury to tendons and ligaments, trembling, bad breath, n/v steroids
high dose steroid usage effect on teens stunted growth
high dose steroid usage effect on men shrinking of testicles, reduced sperm count, infertility, baldness, gynecomastia, increased risk for prostate cancer
high dose steroid usage effect on women growth of facial hair, male-pattern baldness, changes in menstruation, enlargement of the clitoris, deepened voice
s/s of usage: "high" feeling, inappropriate laughter, grandiosity, sedation, lethargy, impaired cognition, distorted sensory perceptions, impaired motor skills, blood-shot eyes, increased appetite, tachycardia and dry mouth cannabis
long term effects of usage: bronchitis, chronic sinusitis, memory impairment, impaired immune function, reproductive dysfunction cannabis
pharmacological treatment for withdrawal: Zyban, Chantix, Aventyl and catapress nicotine
the patch affect on cravings? prevents craving
catapress affect on cravings? controls cravings
aventyl should not be used for nicotine withdrawal for the patient with a hx of MI
clonidine (catapres) is used to control cravings; patient teaching should include changing positions slowly to prevent postural hypotension
this nicotine withdrawal medication should not be used in patients with asthma or pulmonary disease nicotine inhaler
Bupropion (Zyban) is contraindicated with history of seizures or eating disorders
