The Nature of Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Protons and Neutrons | make up nucleus, almost the same mass, bonded by atomic force |
| Electrons | negatively charged and surround nucleus, make up 1/1840 mass of a proton, equal number of protons and electrons in an atom |
| Isotopes | Same element, different amount of neutrons. Different atomic mass, |
| Radioactive isotopes | Isotopes with nuclei that are constantly breaking down, and are radioactive. Dangerous but have incredibly useful medical properties. |
| Chemical Compounds | the chemical bonding of 2+ elements, compound is very diff than the individual elements, water, table salt, and baking soda. |
| Ionic bonds | One or more electrons transferred between elements, the atom losing electrons becomes positive and the atom gaining electrons becomes negative, both molecules become ions. |
| Covalent bonds | Don't transfer electrons but share them, can share 2-6 electrons, create molecules |
| Van der wall bonds | a bond created by two molecules that are extremely close |
| hydrogen bonds | a bond between hydrogen atoms and either nitrogen or oxygen atoms |
