Physical and Chemical Changes in Matter

solid definite shape and definite volume
liquid takes the shape of its container, has a definite volume
gas does NOT have a definite shape or volume
physical change A change in size, shape or state of matter. No new substance is made.
chemical change A change that produces a new substance.
state of matter depends on temperature

weight the pull of gravity on an object
freeze When heat is taken away from a liquid and it changes into a solid
sublimation When a solid turns directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first
evaporate When heat is added to a liquid and it changes into a gas
condense When heat is taken away from a gas and it changes into a liquid
melt When heat is added to a solid and it changes into a liquid
conservation of matter The scientific law that in any physical or chemical change, the total mass of the matter does NOT change.
chemical reaction The process in which one or more substances change into one or more NEW substances.
