Physical and Chemical Changes in Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solid | definite shape and definite volume |
| liquid | takes the shape of its container, has a definite volume |
| gas | does NOT have a definite shape or volume |
| physical change | A change in size, shape or state of matter. No new substance is made. |
| chemical change | A change that produces a new substance. |
| state of matter | depends on temperature |
| differentiate | tell the difference between 2 or more items |
| mass | how much matter is in an object |
| weight | the pull of gravity on an object |
| freeze | When heat is taken away from a liquid and it changes into a solid |
| sublimation | When a solid turns directly into a gas without becoming a liquid first |
| evaporate | When heat is added to a liquid and it changes into a gas |
| condense | When heat is taken away from a gas and it changes into a liquid |
| melt | When heat is added to a solid and it changes into a liquid |
| conservation of matter | The scientific law that in any physical or chemical change, the total mass of the matter does NOT change. |
| chemical reaction | The process in which one or more substances change into one or more NEW substances. |
