The Nursing Assistant in Long-Term Care
Term | Definition |

activities of daily living (ADL) | Daily personal care tasks. includes caring for the mouth and teeth, giving baths, transferring, and so on. |
acute care | 24-hour skilled care given in hospitals and ambulatory settings for short-term, immediate illnesses or injuries. |
adult day services | Care for people who need some assistance/supervision during certain hours, but who do not live in a facility where care is given. |
animal-assisted therapy (AAT) | The practice of bringing pets into a facility/home in order to provide companionship and stimulation. |
assisted living | Residences for people who do not need 24-hour skilled care, but who do require help with daily care. |
assistive devices | Special equipment that helps a person who is ill /disabled perform activities of daily living. |
care team | A group of people with different kinds of education and experience and who provide resident care. |
charge nurse | A nurse responsible for a team of healthcare workers. |
cite | (In a long term facility): to find a problem through a survey. |
continuity of care | An ongoing coordination of a resident's care over time, during which the care team regularly exchanges information and works toward shared goals. |
functional nursing | Method of nursing that involves assigning specific tasks to each team member. (For example, one NA will wash all residents, while another will assist in transporting all residents) |
holistic care | Care that involves the whole person, including their; physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs. |
home health care | Health care that is provided in a person's home. |
hospice care | Holistic care for people who have approximately 6 months or less to live. Care will be available until that person dies. |
intergenerational care | Caring for children and the elderly in the same setting. |
Joint Commission | An independent non-profit organization that evaluates and accredits different types of healthcare facilities. |
liability | Referring to how a person can be held responsible for harming someone else. |
licensed practical/vocational nurse (LPN/LVN) | a licensed nurse who provides skilled nursing care in addition to treatments and medications. |
long-term care | 24-hour skilled care provided in long-term care facilities for people with ongoing conditions. |
Medicaid | A medical assistance program for people with low incomes and those with disabilities. |
Medicare | A federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, those with certain disabilities, who have permanent kidney failure, or are ill and cannot work. |
nursing assistant (NA) | A person who performs assigned nursing tasks and gives personal care. |
