simile a comparison between two things using “as” or “like”
metaphor a comparison between two unlike things using “is”, “are”, “was”, “were” or “has”
irony is a situation in which there is a contrast between expectation and reality (one thing is said or done, while another is meant)
verbal irony when you say one thing but mean another (sarcasm)
situational irony what you expect to happen vs. what actually happens (surprise)
dramatic irony when the reader knows more than the character (creepy music)
dialect a way of speaking, which is characteristic of a certain place or group of people.
problem something that a character wants to change, fix, or to figure out. What goes wrong (a challenge or obstacle).
solution how the character solves or fixes the problem. How the problem is fixed or solved.
text to text Another book I read had something similar to this. OR This is different from another book I read.
text to self something similar happened to me; this reminds me of…
text to world reminds me of something I’ve heard about before.
text to media reminds me of something seen or heard on the radio, Internet, or TV
