| Term | Definition |

| Conduction | The direct transfer of heat from one substance to another substance that it is touching. |
| Convection | The transfer of thermal energy by the circulation or movement of a liquid or gas (hot material rises) |
| Radiation | The transfer of energy by electromagnetic waves |
| greenhouse effect | warming that results when solar radiation is trapped by the atmosphere |
| greenhouse gases | Gases in Earth's atmosphere that trap heat near the surface such as CO2, Methane, Water Vapor, etc |
| trade winds | Prevailing winds that blow northeast from 30 degrees north latitude to the equator and that blow southeast from 30 degrees south latitude to the equator |
| Coriolis effect | The effect of Earth's rotation on the direction of winds and currents. |
| Troposphere | 0-17 km above Earth's surface, site of weather, organisms, contains most atmospheric water vapor. (temperature decreases with increasing altitude, pressure decreases) |
| specific heat | The amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of a substance by 1 degree Celsius |
| Insolation (incoming solar radiation) | the part of the sun's radiation that is received by Earth; also called solar energy. |
| climate | The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time. |
