| Cleavage | A mineral's ability to split easily along flat surfaces. |
| fracture | The way a mineral looks when it breaks apart in an irregular way |
| Luster | The way a mineral reflects light |
| Mineral Hardness | the resistance of a mineral to being scratched; it varies from 1-10 on Moh's Scale of hardness; hardness is a result of the atomic bond strength in a mineral's atomic structure |
| Streak | The color of a mineral in powdered form |
| crystalline structure | Atoms must be arranged in an organized, repetitive manner. |
| Graphite | a shiny, black substance that is used in pencils |
| Calcite | CaCO3. Mineral that bubbles with acid |
| hematite | mineral with red brown streak |
| Sulfur | Mineral that smells like eggs. hardness |
| Quartz | Most common mineral SiO2 |
| Mica | Mineral that flakes into thin sheets |
| dolomite | used in building stones |
| Magnetite | Magnetic mineral that is an ore of iron |
