Rivers

TermDefinition
Valley A low area of land usually cut out by a river
Delta A landform made of sediment that is deposited where a river flows into an ocean or lake
Tributary A stream or river that flows into a larger river
flood plain Low lying area near a river that floods during periods of high rainfall
meandering river river that follows a winding path through a river valley
watershed (drainage basin) The land from which surface water drains into a particular river, lake, wetland, or other body of water.
oxbow lake a crescent-shaped lake (often temporary) that is formed when a meander of a river is cut off from the main channel
