| Biogeochemical Cycles | Elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one part of the biosphere to another |
| Biomass | Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level |
| Biotic Factor | Any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact |
| Carrying Capacity | Largest number of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support |
| Climate | Average year |
| Climax Community | Final, stable community that has grown back/returned after ecological succession |
| Deforestation | The cutting down of forests |
| Denitrification | Process by which bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas |
| Ecological Succession | Series of gradual changes that occur in a community following a disturbance |
| Ecology | Scientific study of interactions among and between organisms and their environment |
| Ecosystem | All the organisms that live in a place, together with their nonliving environment |
| Emigration | Movement of individuals out of an area (think E for Exit and E for Emigration) |
| Evaporation | Water is heated and turns from liquid to gas |
| Habitat | Area in which an organism lives, including the biotic and abiotic factors that affect it |
| Immigration | Movement of individuals into an area occupied by an existing population (think I for Into and I for Immigration) |
| Limiting Factor | Factor that causes population growth to decrease |
| Niche | How an organism uses the physical and biological characteristics that it lives in |
| Pioneer Species | The first species to populate an area during succession |
| Population | Groups of individuals of the same species that live in the same area |
| Population Density | Number of individuals per unit area |
| Species | Group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring |
| Symbiosis | Relationship in which two species live close together |
