Abiotic Factor Nonliving factor that shapes an ecosystem
Biogeochemical Cycles Elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one part of the biosphere to another
Biomass Total amount of living tissue within a given trophic level
Biotic Factor Any living part of the environment with which an organism might interact
Carrying Capacity Largest number of individuals of a particular species that a particular environment can support
Climate Average year
Climax Community Final, stable community that has grown back/returned after ecological succession
Deforestation The cutting down of forests
Denitrification Process by which bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas
Ecological Succession Series of gradual changes that occur in a community following a disturbance
Ecology Scientific study of interactions among and between organisms and their environment
Ecosystem All the organisms that live in a place, together with their nonliving environment
Emigration Movement of individuals out of an area (think E for Exit and E for Emigration)
Evaporation Water is heated and turns from liquid to gas
Habitat Area in which an organism lives, including the biotic and abiotic factors that affect it
Immigration Movement of individuals into an area occupied by an existing population (think I for Into and I for Immigration)
Limiting Factor Factor that causes population growth to decrease
Niche How an organism uses the physical and biological characteristics that it lives in
Pioneer Species The first species to populate an area during succession
Population Groups of individuals of the same species that live in the same area
Population Density Number of individuals per unit area
Species Group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring
Symbiosis Relationship in which two species live close together
