Rocks and Minerals

Natural Resources: Rocks and Minerals

QuestionAnswer
How is a mineral like a compound? Minerals and compounds cannot be separated.
How is a rock like a mixture? Rocks and mixtures can be separated.
How are minerals identified? Minerals are identified by physical and chemical properties.
What element is most abundant in the crust? Oxygen is most abundunt in the crust.
What is the second most abundant element in the crust? Silicon is the second most abundant element in the crust.
What characteristics can rocks possess which would distinguish them from sediments? Rocks can have banding, mineral alignment, or different grain sizes.
How are sedimentary rocks formed? Sedimentary rocks form from despoition of sediments, compaction of sediment, and cementation of sediments.
How does clastic differ from bioclastic? Clastic is inorganic. Bioclastic is organic.
What factors determine the crystal size in rocks formed from molten material? How fast the rock cools determines the crystal size in rocks formed from molten material.
Where are sedimentary rocks generally found on earth? Sedimentary rocks are generally found underwater.
What effect does molten material have upon the rock it comes in contact with? Molten material causes contact metamorphism when it comes in contact with a rock.
What is the advantage of a renewable resource compared to a non-renewable resource? A non-renewable resource will run out, but a renewable resource won't.
What is the purpose of recycling and conservation efforts? The purpose of recycling and conservation efforts is to save our non-renewable resources.
Why must we seek out and begin to use alternative energy resources? Oil, coal, and natural gas are non-renewable resources.
How does the distribution of natural resources on the Earth affect global politics? Countries might fight over natural resources.
What are natural resources? Natural resources are parts of the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere that we use.
What are renewable natural resources? Renewable natural resources are natural resources that can be replaced in our lifetime.
What are non-renewable resources? Non-renewable resources are natural resources that can't be replaced in our lifetime.
What is conservation? Conservation is when you use less and recycle and reuse more.
How does recycling help to conserve fossil fuels? Recycling helps to conserve fossil fuels because plastics are made from fossil fuels.
Why should water be conserved? Water should be conserved because if it runs out, we won't have anything to drink.
What is meant by the "rock cycle"? The "rock cycle" is how rocks form and change from one type to another.
What are the two processes that change rocks into sediments? Weathering and erosion are the two processes that change rocks into sediments.
What are the two processes that will metamorphose rocks? Heat and pressure are the two processes that will metamorphose rocks.
What rock forms directly from magma? Igneous rocks form direclty from magma.
What is the process that changes magma into igneous rocks? Solidification changes magma into igneous rocks.
How do sediments become sedimentary rocks? The sediments are deposited, compacted, and cemented to become sedimentary rocks.
For weathering and erosion to occur, rocks must be what? For weathering and erosion to occur, rocks must be uplifted.
Igneous rocks can form from what rock types? Igneous rocks can form from all rock types.
What rock forms from the melting of other rock types? Igneous rocks form from the melting of other rock types.
What is banding? Banding is when the minerals in the rock are separated by density.
All rocks are made up of what? All rocks are made up of minerals.
The grouping of things that are alike is the science of what? The grouping of things that are alike is the science of classification.
Rocks formed when melted minerals cool and harden are classified as what? Rocks formed when melted minerals cool and harden are classified as igneous rocks.
Magma that reaches the Earth's surface is called what? Magma that reaches the Earth's surface is called lava.
A rock formed when another rock is changed by heat and pressure is classified as what? A rock formed when another rock is changed by heat and pressure is classified as a metamorphic rock.
The series of natural processes by which rocks are slowly changed from one kind to another is what? The series of natural processes by which rocks are slowly changed from one kind to another is the rock cycle.
