A Brief History of Science Definitions

| Science | An endeavor dedicated to the accumulation and clasification ofobservable facts in order to formulated general laws about the natural world |
| Papyrus | An ancient form of paper that revolutionized the way information pass transmitted |
| Density | A measure of how tighty packed the matter is in a subtance |
| Classification | Ordering information in a reasonable, systematic way |
| Spontaneous Generation | The belief that living organisms can form from nonliving substances |
| Geocentric System | Belief the earth was the center of the universe with the sun and planets orbiting it |
| Alchemy | The belief that an inexpensive metal could be turned into an expensive metal |
| Chemical Reaction | When one or more substances interact to form one or more new substances |
| Dark Ages | Period from 500 A.D. to 1000 A. D. where little advances were made in science |
| Supernova | An explosion of a star |
| Nebula | A cloud of dust and gas formed by the explosion of a star |
| Heliocentric System | The sun is the center of the univers and planets travel around it |
| Law of Mass Conservation | Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only changed |
| Combustion | The process of burning |
| Industrial Revolution | Period of history where increased scientific knowledge let to the invention of many machines that made work easier |
| Evolution | The process by which new species or populations of living things develop from preexisting forms through successive generations |
| Immutability of the Species | The belief that organisms remained unchanged throughout history |
| Natural Selection | The process where living organisms can adapt to change in their surroundings |
| Pasteurization | The partial sterilization of a product, such as milk or wine, to make it safe forconsumption and improve its quality |
| Geology | The study of how the earth was formed, its structures and composition, and types of process acting on it |
| Genetics | The study of how traits are passed down from parent to offspring |
| First Law of Thermodynamics | Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only changed |
