TermDefinition
Battery A device that can generate an electric current by creating a potential difference between two poles
biomass energy the chemical energy stored in organic matter or wastes
Chemical Change A change that involves the rearrangement of atoms to form a new substance
Chemical Potential Energy Potential energy held in the chemical bonds of a substance.
Combustibility Capable of igniting and burning in the presence of oxygen
Combustion Reaction A reaction that occurs between a fuel source and oxygen where water and carbon dioxide are produced.
Conduction the transfer of heat from a warmer object to a cooler object through direct contact
Conservation of energy Energy is not created or destroyed but only changes form
conservation the wise management of natural resources, including the preservation of habitats and wildlife
convection current A current in a fluid that moves heat around
Convection The movement of energy in cells that move in a fluid motion within liquids, gasses and plasma
Elastic Potential Energy is energy stored in an elastic object, such as a rubber band or a spring, when that object is stretched or compressed.
Energy The ability to do work.
fossil fuels a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
geothermal energy thermal energy in Earth's interior from water or steam that has been heated by magma
Heat flow Energy travels in the form of heat from a relatively warm location to a relatively cool location. i.e. Cold is the absence of heat
Heat The transfer of thermal energy from warmer to cooler objects
hydroelectric energy electrical energy produced by the flow of water
kinetic energy formula 1/2 x mass x velocity^2
Kinetic Energy Energy of motion that is in the process of doing work
Magnetic Potential Energy is the energy of an object that exists in a magnetic field.
Mechanical Energy Energy involved with moving or displacing objects.
natural resources materials found in nature that are used by living things
nonrenewable resource A natural resource that is not replaced in a useful time frame.
nuclear energy The potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Photoelectric Cell A specialized metal contained in a cell that can convert sunlight into electrical energy.
Potential energy formula m x g x h
Potential Energy Stored energy that has the potential to do work
Precipitate A product of a chemical reaction that in not soluble in a solution
Radiation The transport of energy through space without contact between molecules
Reactivity The natural tendency of an atom, compound or molecule to interact with another atom, compound or molecule to form a new chemical substance
renewable resource A natural resource that can be replaced at the same rate at which the resource is consumed
resources materials found in the earth that people need and value
solar energy energy from the sun that is converted into thermal or electrical energy
thermal conductor a material that conducts thermal energy well
thermal insulator a material that conducts thermal energy poorly

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
