TermDefinition
Resource a substance in the environment that is useful to people, is easy to access, and is socially acceptable to use
Renewable resource a natural resource that can be replaced at roughly the same rate as it is used
Nonrenewable resource a resource that cannot be replaced
Conservation protecting and preserving the natural resources and environment
Preservation a resource in its present condition, with as little human contact as possible
Law of conservation of energy energy cannot be created nor destroyed, just changed from one form to another
Biomass energy from plant products and/or animal waste, typically used as a fuel source
Fossil fuels coal, oil, natural gas, and other fuels that come from remains of plants and animals
Petroleum a thick, flammable mixture that can be a liquid, solid, or gas and can be processed into different materials such as gasoline, kerosine, natural gas, asphalt
Greenhouse gasses gasses in the atmosphere that trap heat near the surface
Fracking injecting liquid at a high pressure into shale to free up petroleum resources,such as oil or natural gas
Geothermal energy generated from the heat from within the Earth
Hydroelectric energy generated from flowing water
Nuclear energy energy is generated from the nucleus of atoms
Solar Energy from the sun
Photovoltaic cells devices that capture the energy from light and convert into electricity
Wind energy from transforming the motion of air into electrical energy using a turbine
