Cell Reproduction

Vocabulary

TermDefinition
cell cycle cells reproduce by a cycle of growing and dividing
interphase the stage during which the cell grows, carries out cellular functions, replicates DNA, and prepares for the next stage of the cycle.
mitosis the stage of the cell cycle during which the nucleus and nuclear material divides.
cytokinesis the method by which a cell's cytoplasm divides , creating a new cell.
chromosome the structure that contains the genetic material that is passed from generation to generation of cells.
chromatin the relaxed form of DNA in the cell's nucleus
prophase the first and longest stage of mitosis. the nuclear membrane disintegrates, nucleolus disappears, chromosomes condense, spindle apparatus begins to form between poles
sister chromatid structures that contain identical copies of DNA
centromere structure that joins sister chromatids
spindle apparatus the whole structure that contains spindle fibers, centrioles, and aster fibers
metaphase second stage of mitosis, the chromatids are pulled by motor proteins along the spindle apparatus
anaphase third stage of mitosis, the sister chromatids are pulling apart during anaphase
telophase the stage of mitosis that the chromosomes arrive at the poles of the cell and begin to unwind and relax
cyclin proteins that bind to CDK that control the cell cycle
cyclin-dependent kinase enzyme that forms a complex with cyclins that regulate the cell cycle
cancer the uncontrolled growth and division of cells- a failure in the cell cycle.
carcinogen agents that are known to cause cancer
apoptosis programmed cell death
stem cell unspecialized cells that can develop into specialized cells

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
