fungi phyla

TermDefinition
Ascomycetes a phylum of fungi that produce sexual spores in saclike asci located at the surfaces of fruiting bodies known as ascocarps; also includes yeast
Basdiomycetes a phylum of fungi that reproduce sexually; meiosis occurs in basidium to produce basidiospores; examples include cup fungus and mushrooms
primary mycelium A mycelium in which the cells are monokaryotic and haploid; a mycelium that grows from either an ascospore or a basidiospore.
secondary mycelium a dikaryotic mycelium formed by the fusion of two primary hyphae
Glomeromycota a group of fungi that form mutualistic relationships with the roots of plants; arbuscular mycorrhizae
Zygomycota Group of fungi that produce a zygospore during sexual reproduction and sporangiospores during asexual reproduction; examples include bread mold (Rhizopus)
Chytridiomycota Group of aquatic fungi with flagellated zoospores; associated with the kill off of amphibians
Blastocladiomycota Group of fungi with zoospores; exhibit alternation of generations similar to plants
Neocallimastigomycota Group of fungi found in animal guts aide in break down of cellulose and lignin; contain the enzyme cellulase; lack true mitochondria (hydrogenosomes instead)
Microsporidia fungi that are intracellular parasites; lack mitochondria; previously classified as a protist
Karyogamy Fusion of two haploid nuclei to form a diploid nucleus. Occurs in many fungi, and in animals and plants during fertilization of gametes
Chitosan polysaccharide derived from chitin found in the cell walls of zygomycetes
S. cerevisiae Ascomycete known as budding yeast; used in the brewing of beer and wine, and in baking; important model organism used in biomedical research
Conidia Asexual fungi spores of Ascomycetes
Basidiocarp Elaborate fruiting body of a dikaryotic mycelium of a club fungus (basidiomycota).
ascus (asci) the structure in which the haploid ascospores are formed in the phylum Ascomycota
