Earth's Structure

layers of the earth vocabulary

TermDefinition
lithosphere made up of the crust and the upper part of the mantle
crust the thin and solid outermost layer of the Earth
mantle the layer of semi-molten rock between the Earth's crust and core
molten melted by heat
continental crust the part of the crust that is about 25km to 70km thick that makes up the continents - thicker than oceanic but less dense -made up of mostly sedimentary and metamorphic rock
oceanic crust the part of the crust that is about 6km to 11km thick that forms the ocean floors - thinner than continental but more dense - made up of mostly igneous rock
outer core the liquid layer of the Earth's core made of the metals iron and nickel
inner core densest and hottest layer of the Earth made of solid iron and nickel
mesosphere The strong, lower part of the mantle between the asthenosphere and the outer core . (meso means middle...think word within a word)
asthenosphere The soft layer of the mantle on which the tectonic plates move due to convection.
convection currents heat driven cycles that occur in the air, ocean, and mantle; caused by hotter material rising and cooler material sinking
