Vocabulary for Yr 9 Energy

Energy The ability to do work or make something happen
Chemical Potential Energy Energy stored in the bonds between atoms
Gravitational Potential Energy Energy stored in objects due to their height above the ground
Elastic Potential Energy Energy stored in stretched or squashed objects
Kinetic Energy Energy due to an objects motion
Electrical Energy Energy due to the movement of electrically-charged particles
Heat Energy Energy due to the movement of particles/atoms. Temperature is a measure of this
Sound Energy The energy of vibrating objects - some may be heard
Light Energy The energy of electromagnetic waves - some may be visible
Law of Conservation of Energy "energy cannot be created or destroyed, but it can be transformed from one form to another"
Convection The transfer of heat energy through a liquid or gas by the motion of particles
Conduction The transfer of heat energy through a substance by direct contact
Radiation The transfer of heat energy by infrared waves
Thermal Conductor Materials that are good at moving heat energy through them (eg metals)
Thermal Insulator Materials that resist the movement of heat energy through them (eg plastics, air)
