Honors BioCh11, Pt 1

Meiosis and Development

TermDefinition
Meiosis Type of cell division in which the number of chromosomes per cell is cut in half to produce gametes
Diploid Containing two sets of homologous chromosomes
Haploid Containing a single set of chromosomes
Gametes Sex cells like sperm or eggs
Homologous Having shared DNA sequences, such as a pair of matching chromosomes from 2 parents
Crossover Process in which homologous chromosomes exchange portions of their chromatids during meiosis
Tetrad Structure containing four chromatids that forms during Prophase I of meiosis
Independent assortment Random chromosome combinations generated during meiosis that contribute to the creation of unique gametes
Stem cell Non-specialized cell with the potential to specialize into one or more cell types
Totipotent Having the potential to develop into any type of cell in the body
Pluripotent Having the potential to develop into many cell types
Multipotent Having the potential to develop into a few cell types; adult stem cells are typically of this type
Sexual reproduction Generation of non-identical offspring that involves the fusion of reproductive cells from 2 parents
Zygote Cell produced by the union of male and female reproductive cells
Fertilization Joining of sperm and egg to form a new cell with the capability to develop into a mature organism
