What does excess Glucocorticoids cause? How is this characterized? Cushing's syndrome;obesity, hyperglycemia, glycosuria, HTN, appearance of potbelly, moon face, and buffalo hump
What does adrenal insufficiency cause? How is this characterized? Addison's dz; weakness, emaciation, hypoglycemia, increased pigmentation of skin and mucous membranes
What must patients be advised of when taking glucocorticoids about dosage and supply? Take 2/3 in am & 1/3 in pm;At times of stress dosage must be increased, have ER supply w/ at all times including injectable plus oral med, wear ID bracelet for ER
What are S & S of adrenal crisis? What can this be caused by? hypotension,weakness, dehydration, vomiting diarrhea; adrenal failure from abrupt withdrawal of glucocorticoid therapy
What is the tx of adrenal crisis? Rapid replacement of fluids, salt, glucocorticoids, and sugar; injecting 100mg of hydrocortisone IV bolus followed by IV infusion of NS w/ dextrose, addtl hydrocortisone given 100mg/8hr
What are AE of glucocorticoids? Adrenal insufficiency, infection, PUD, muscle weakness, cushing appearance
What are the uses for glucocorticoids? suppress inflammation, immune response, replacement therapy for adrenal insufficiency
