Apologia Biology Module 5

QuestionAnswer
What is Matter? Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What is a Model? An explanation or representation of something that cannot be seen.
What is an Element? A collection of atoms that all have the same number of protons.
What are Molecules? Chemicals that result from atoms linking together.
What is a Physical Change? A change that affects the appearance but not the chemical makeup of a substance.
What is a Chemical Change? A change that alters the makeup of the elements or molecules of a substance.
What is a Phase? One of three forms -- solid, liquid, or gas -- which every substance is capable of attaining.
What is Diffusion? The random motion of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.
What is Concentration? A measurement of how much solute exists within a certain volume of solvent.
What is a Semipermeable Membrane? A membrane that allows some molecules to pass through but does not allow other molecules to pass through.
What is Osmosis? The tendency of a solvent to travel across a semipermeable membrane into areas of higher solute concentration.
What is a Catalyst? A substance that alters the speed of a chemical reaction but is not used up in the process.
What are Organic Molecules? A molecule that contains only carbon and any of the following: hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur, and/or phosphorous.
What is Biosynthesis? The process by which living organisms produce larger molecules from smaller ones.
What are Isomers? Two different molecules that have the same chemical formula.
What are Monosaccharides? Simple carbohydrates that contain 3 to 10 carbon atoms.
What are Disaccharides? Carbohydrates that are made up of two monosaccharides.
What are Polysaccharides? Carbohydrates that are made up of more than two monosaccharides.
What is a Dehydration Reaction? A chemical reaction in which molecules combine by removing water.
What is Hydrolysis? Breaking down complex molecules by the chemical addition of water.
What does Hydrophobic mean? Lacking any affinity to water.
What is Saturated fat? A lipid made from fatty acids that have no double bonds between carbon atoms.
What is Unsaturated fat? A lipid made from fatty acids that have at least one double bond between carbon atoms.
What is a Peptide bond? A bond that links amino acids together in a protein.
What is a Hydrogen Bond? A strong attraction between hydrogen atoms and certain other atoms (usually oxygen or nitrogen) in specific molecules.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
