Weather Review

QuestionAnswer
What is the atmosphere? What are the layers of the atmosphere in order? The gasses that surround a planet. 4 layers troposphere*ozone layer*, stratosphere, mesosphere and thermosphere
How did the atmosphere form? formed mainly from gasses spewed from volcanoes
What is air pressure? Does air pressure increase or decrease the closer you get to Earth? Why? force air molecules push down on surface.increases the closer you get to earth. has more pressure
What gases make up the atmosphere? nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon dioxide
What are some ways air pressure affects human life? they affect people who live higher altitudes and have a lack of air pressure
What creates wind? What does density and temperature have to do with it? the movement of air. warm low density air rises low pressure, cool high density high pressure
What are the 5 types of global winds? Be able to label them on a map! trade winds, ITCZ, horse latitudes, westerlies, and polar easterlies
How are weather and climate different? weather reflects short-term conditions. climate -average weather for an extended period of time at a certain location
What is an air mass? How is it different from a front? large body of air similar properties. front-borderline between two air masses
What is the symbol for a cold front? Warm front? Stationary front? Occluded front? What kind of weather do you get with each front? cold front: long line 3 down pointed triangles, warm front: long line:3 round half circles, stationary front: long line 2 half circles up and 1 upside down triangle, occluded front: long line 2 half circles above 1 triangle in middle upw
What is humidity? What does 100% relative humidity mean? the amount of water vapor or moisture in the air. it means rain
How do clouds form? warm air rises into the atmosphere and cools
What are the three main types of clouds? Draw a picture of each. cirrus clouds, cumulus clouds, and stratus clouds
What are mammatus clouds? Fog? Contrails? Lenticular clouds? Nimbostratus clouds? Draw a picture of each. mammatus-sagging, pouch-like clouds fog-stratus clouds that are heavy with water vapor it condenses on ground lenticular- look like flying saucers or stacks of flat circles Nimbostratus-produces light to heavy rain contrails- condense w
How do thunderstorms form? What kind of clouds do thunderstorms come from? forms by moisture, rising unstable air, and lifting mechanism to provide the nudge. forms cumulonimbus clouds
How does hail form? How is hail like an onion? formed by water in the cloud freezes onto dust or dirt
What causes lightning? What causes thunder? lightning-caused by exchange of electricity between two opposite charged surfaces. thunder-caused when a cold front meets a warm front cumulonimbus cloud forms
How can you tell how far away a thunderstorm is located? What should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? count 5 seconds between seeing lightning and hearing thunder safety- away from metal- stay from tall structures
How do tornadoes form? What kind of clouds do tornadoes form from? Where do most tornadoes occur? wind travel 2 different directions rolling motion turned into a column by strong air in cumulonimbus cloud air begins to spin within column forms a funnel cloud. occur in tornado valley
How do we rate how strong tornadoes are? What is the strongest? Weakest? What is the strongest tornado we’ve had in North Carolina? tornadoes are ranked from EF0(weakest) to EF5(strongest). tornado in anson and richmond counties on Februray 19,1884
What’s the difference between a tornado warning and a watch? How do you stay safe in a tornado? tornado watch: conditions are right for a tornado, be aware. tornado warning: tornado was spotted take cover. get to the lowest room of the house, stay from glass window/sharp objects. get in a bathtub/under mattress
How are hurricanes formed? How is a hurricane different from a tornado? warm air above the water provides energy and makes clouds. tornadoes occur over land hurricanes form over the ocean
How are hurricanes named? What happens to the names of really destructive hurricanes? named alphabetically every year. they are retired if they are really destructive.
How do we rate how strong hurricanes are? What is the strongest? Weakest? ranked from tropical depression(weakest) to category 5(strongest).
Why do hurricanes die out over land? hurricanes require evaporation from the warm ocean surface in order to survive
What is the eye of the hurricane? How do you stay safe in a hurricane? How often do we have hurricanes in North Carolina? the very middle of the hurricane is extremely calm. have emergency plan. if being told to evacuate in advance do so, stay from down power lines. ever so often
What are hurricane called in Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Ocean? pacific: typhoons, atlantic:hurricanes, indiana:cyclones
How do blizzards form? What are the 3 main things they require for formation? cold, dry canadian air moves south and mixes with warm moist air mass moving north from gulf of mexico
Briefly describe the 4 blizzards we discussed in class. 1927 blizzard- 20 inches of snow in parts of central NC 1980 blizzard- areas had 22-24 inches of snowfall 1993 blizzard- NC received 8 inches of snow, higher elevation 24 inches of snowfall 1996 blizzard-city asheville overnight snowfall 20 inches
What is barometric pressure? What instrument is used to measure it? measurement of air pressure in atmosphere. barometer
What kind of weather does high air pressure bring? Low air pressure? fair settled weather, below 29.80 in Hg
What are isobars? What do they tell you on a map? What do they have to do with wind? line drawn on weather map connecting points of equal pressure, tells about sea level.
What direction does weather generally move across the USA? west to east
