Unit 8.1 Bed Bugs

how traits can change in an environment over time.

QuestionAnswer
how are genes and traits connected in this process the gene determines the structure, this determines the function of the protein, which then determines the trait that we see.
mutations impact the trait of an organism mutations result in an alteration to the trait, for example a four leaf clover plant instead of a three leaf clover.
mutations can have three impacts on an species survival beneficial, neutral, or harmful
A beneficial trait such as camouflage can be distributed over time in a population when the beneficial trait becomes more common in a population
How do you determine if a mutation is beneficial a trait is beneficial if it becomes more common over time and increases the chances of survival and or reproduction.
Natural selection traits that help an organism survive are more likely to occur in a population
How can the environment impact traits changes to the environments conditions result in adaptations, natural selection allows organisms with desired traits to have a higher survival/reproduction rate , causing over time those traits to be more common in the population.
steps to determine the traits of an organism gene - protein structure- protein function - trait
Heritable When a trait is able to be passed from parent to offspring
Distribution The way that related traits are divided in a population of organisms.
Natural Selection The process by which individual organisms with traits that are beneficial in their environment are more likely to survive and produce more offspring.
Adaptation  A change over many generations in the distribution of inherited traits in a population that causes organisms in the population to be better able to reproduce.
Resistance The ability to not be affected by something that is normally harmful.
A sequence of DNA that determines the structure of a protein. The combination of genes on the chromosomes determines what proteins are made in the cell. Gene
Large complex molecules that are responsible for traits. They make up the structure and control most functions and chemical reactions in living cells. Protein
A random and permanent change to a genetic material in a gene. These are rare in nature. Mutation
The chances or likelihood that something will happen. Probability
Environmental Conditions Variables in the environment such as food and water availability, water quality, temperature, air quality, topography, habitat, and natural hazards.
A characteristic of an organism; many traits are inherited (genetic). Trait
Population A group of organisms of a species living in the same environment over time.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
