Term | Definition |

rotation | The spinning of a body, such as a planet, on its axis. |
Day/Night | Caused by earth's rotation |
axis | imaginary line around which Earth spins |
Day | The time it takes a planet to complete one full rotation on its axis. |
Earth makes one complete rotation in this amount of time | 24 hours /1 day |
Revolution | The motion of a body that travels around another body in space. |
The time it takes Earth to make one complete revolution around the sun. | 365 ¼ days / 1 year |
Tilt- 23.5 degrees | Earth’s axis always points towards the North Star as Earth revolves around the sun. This means the direction of the tilt never changes. |
Season | Caused by the Earth's tilt as it revolves around the sun. |
Solstice | Summer and winter begin on these days |
Summer Solstice | The most hours of daylight occur on this day |
Winter Solstice | The least hours of daylight occur on this day |
Equinox | Fall and spring begin on these days. The hours of daylight and darkness are approximately equal on these days. |
