CellStructure/Functi

CellStructure/Functions

QuestionAnswer
What are cells? Cells are the smallest functional units of living organisms.
Within each cell, what is there? There are smaller working structures that carry out specific functions within the cell (organelle).
What do the set of organelles do? They keep the cell functioning and contributing to the whole organism.
What are the gate keeper(s)? Cell Walls and Cell Membranes
What is a cell membrane? A thin, flexible barrier that surrounds the cell and controls what goes into and out of the cell (selectively permeable).
What is a cell wall? A rigid supporting layer that surrounds the cell of plants. Help with overall shape and structure.
What is cytoplasm? A gel like substance found within the cell that holds the organelles in place.
What is a nucleus? It contains the cells genetic information (DNA); one of the largest organelles in a call; the control center or “boss”.
What is mitochondria? The “powerhouse” of the cell; convert energy stored in food to energy the cell can use.
What is the chloroplast? An organelle found in plants that that helps them make food (photosynthesis). Contains chlorophyll (green pigment).
What is the lysosome? The cells recycling center or trash truck or recycling center; they break down food particles into smaller pieces and breakdown old worn-out cell parts.
What is the vacuole? The storage site for food, water, and waste.
Name some differences between plant and animal cells? General shape, plant cells have a cell wall and animal cells do not, plant cells have chloroplasts and animal cells do not, and plant cells have a larger, more centralized vacuole.
What do specialized cells do in complex organisms? Different types of cells can be observed.
Each type of cell does what? One type of job, while other types of cells do other jobs.
They differ in structure and? Differ in function
Cells make up an organism and also... Create tissues. Tissues working together create organs. Organs working together create organ systems. Organ systems working together create organisms.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
