SPECIAL SENSES CH 13

CH 13- hEARING & VISION

QuestionAnswer
SENSORY SYSTEM • Protects us by detecting environmental changes • Acts as Warning System • Tracks what’s happening within our bodies
RECEPTOR Specialized area of sensory neuron that detects a specific stimulus
1. CHEMORECEPTORS Taste & Smell Stimulated by changes in chemicals such as H+, Ca & food
2. PAIN RECEPTORS/ NOCICEPTORS Pain Stimulated by tissue damage or distension
3. THERMORECEPTORS Heat and Cold Stimulated by changes of temperature
4. MECHANORECEPTORS Hearing & equilibrium Stimulated by changes in pressur eor movement of liquids
5. PHOTORECEPTORS Sight Stimulated by LIGHT
SENSATION A conscious awareness of incoming sensory information. Four components: 1-Stimulus 2- Receptor 3- Sensory Nerve 4- Special area of the brain
STIMULUS (Light/Sound)⇒
o RECEPTOR detects a specific stimulus. PHOTORECEPTOR
o SENSORY NERVE Conduction of impulses through Nerves ⇒ II-Optic ==> Occipital Lobe
o Special area of the brain that interprets ⇒ Occipital Lobe for interpretation
MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF SENSATION • PROJECTION-SENSATION • ADAPTATION-SMELL
PROJECTION Sensation-bRAIN AFTER RECEIVING THE inFO, refers back the sensation to the source. Injured finger hurt "Phantom limb"
ADAPTATION Sense of Smell- Sensory receptors become "adapted". Continuously stimulated therefore receptors sends fewer signals that interprets the smell
SOMATIC SENSES GENERAL SENSES- receptors are widely spread throughout the body PAIN, TOUCH, PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE, AND PROPRIOCEPTION
SPECIALIZED SENSES Localized within a particular organ in the head TASTE, SMELL, SIGHT, HEARING & BALANCE
RECEPTORS FOR GENERAL SENSES SKIN, MUSCLES, JOINTS & VISCERA
