Connective Tissue HB

Connective Tissue

QuestionAnswer
Connective Tissue -one of the primary tissues -contains cells and varying amounts of extracellular material
What is the function of connective tissue? holds cells together, forming tissues and organs
Connective tissue proper supports and binds other tissues together; provide insulation and protections for other tissues
mesenchyme stem cell that all connective tissues are formed from
Vascularity presence of blood vessels
Connective tissues are composed of... extracellular matrix
Extracellular matrix a complex network of proteins and other macromolecules that hold the cells in a tissue together
Three types of loose connective tissue -areolar -adipose -reticular
Areolar tissue -mostly open space -holds water and slats for surrounding tissue
Where is areolar tissue found? under epithelium and around organs
Adipose tissue comprised of fat cells
Adipocytes fat cells
Reticular tissue contains reticular fibers, which create a stiff framework that supports other cells
Function of adipose tissue insulates, warms body, provides nutrients
Loose connective tissue type of connective tissue that serves primarily as a packing material. -Contains many cells around a loose network of collagen and elastic fibers
Dense connective tissue (DCT) type of connective tissue that consists primarily of densely packed fibers, such as those found in ligaments and tendons
Three types of dense connective tissue (DCT) -regular -irregular -elastic
Regular DCT collagen fibers are arranged in one direction
Function of regular dense connective tissue provides "tensile strength" like a rope
Where is regular dense connective tissue found? tendons and ligaments
Irregular DCT collagen fibers arranged in many directions
Function of irregular dense connective tissue provides strength in multiple directions
Where is irregular dense connective tissue found? capsules around organs
Elastic DCT provides flexible cushioning
Where is elastic dense connective tissue found? found between vertebrae and in arteries
Cartilage -type of specialized connective tissue -found in joints on the articular surfaces of the bone and other locations such as the nose and ears
Three types of cartilage -hyaline -fibro cartilage -elastic
Hyaline cartilage -glassy looking -firm ground substance -few collagen fibers
Lacuna spaces for cells
Where is hyaline cartilage found? found in the larynx, bridge of nose, ribs
Fibrocartilage -contains lots of collagen, mostly running parallel
Where is fibrocartilage found? found in intervertebral spaces
Elastic cartilage -highly flexible -more elastic fibers
Where are elastic fibers found? found in outer ear and tip of nose
Osteocytes bone cell derived from osteoblasts that has been surrounded by calcified extracellular material
Osseous bone tissue
Two types of osseous (bone) tissue -spongy -compact

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
