Discuss special considerations in communication with older people and children elderly- don't assume they cannot function well or are irritable dont base mental status on age, may experience less pain/report less changes, make them feel confident in your care Child- down to thier level, allow comfort person/item, truthful, modest
Describe the use of written communications and documentation written comm= protocols, PCR, special reports, advance directive, Pt orders, Standing orders
state the purpose of a patient care report legal document, describes everything that happened! continuity of care education admin info essential research record evaluation and CQI
explain the legal implications of the PCR legal document, can be taken to court
describe how to document refusal of care, including the legal implications -complete assessment! Must have evidence the Pt can make rational decision! Discuss state/local special reporting requirements, such as GSWs, dog bites, or abuse GSW, Animal bites, Infectious diseases, physical/sexual abuse, MCI in these special requirements situations, you may be required to file special reports Learn local requirements failure to report=legal consequences
Describe the basic types communication verbal- radio, partner, cellphone, orders, verbal reports nonverbal- body lang., facial expression written- protocols, PCR, special reports, advance directives, standing orders
Describe the use of radio communication, including the proper methods of indicating and terminating a radio call Maintenace of equipment = YOUR JOB! communication between you and medical control Address the unit you are calling and provide the name of your unit, brief and clear, no codes or unapproved abbreviations, no names, when finished say over
List the correct radio procedures in the following phases of typical call alert: after dispatch, on scene, enroute to hospital, IHERN report, back in service

Discuss special considerations in communication with Pts hard of hearing, visually impaired Pts, and non-English speaking Pts Hearing- use paper/pen, let them read lips, never shout, short questions, basic sign language Vision: explain EVERYTHING your doing, avoid sudden movements non-English- simple/short, basic phrases, find translator (family/child)
