Experiment Design

TermDefinition
Observation gathering information through our senses
Inference an explanation for the observations we make. It is based on our prior knowledge and experiences.
Citizen Science Scientific work undertaken by the general public.
Observational Study A type of study where we can not control any variables. Often used while studying things in nature.
Controlled Experiment A type of study where all variables are kept the same between all groups except for the independent variable.
Independent Variable The variable that you change (on purpose) in order to see how it affects something else.
Dependent Variable The variable you observe and collect data on. It is being affected by what you are testing.
Constants Variable Factors that stay the same between all groups in an experiment.
Control Group The group that has all constant variables, but not the independent variable. Used for comparison
Hypothesis An educated prediction that is an "If ____ then___" statement that includes both the independent and dependent variable
Scientific Question What you hope to learn in an experiment. Can be stated as "Does _____ affect _____?" and includes both the independent and dependent variable
