5 geologic time scale | a chart that divides Earth's history into different time units based on changes in the rocks and fossils |
6 extinction | event that occurs when the last individual of a species dies |
7 biological evolution | the change over time in populations of related organisms |
8 naturalist | a person who studies plants and animals by observing them |
9 variation | a slight difference of an inherited trait among individual members of a species |
10 natural selection | the process by which organisms with variations that help them survive in their environment live longer, compete better, and reproduce more than those that do not have the variations |
11 adaptation | an inherited trait that increases an organisms chance of surviving and reproducing in a particular environment |
12 camouflage | an adaptation that enables a species to blend in with its environment |
13 mimicry | an adaptation that one species looks like another species |
14 selective breeding | the selection and breeding of organisms for desired traits |
15 comparative anatomy | the studies of similarities and differences among structures of living species |
16 homologous structure | body parts of an organism that are similar in structure and position but different in function |
17 Analogous structure | body parts that preform a similar function but different in structure |
18 vestigial structure | body part that has lost its original function through evoloution |
19 embryology | the science of the development of embryos from fertilization to birth |
