Castanea mollisima Chinese chestnut leaf margins are similar to american chestnut but the leaf is broader and somewhat scabrous on the surface
Castanea pumila Chinkapin smaller leaves than the american chestnut with tomentose under surface, generally white on the underside single seed burs Tomentose twigs
Quarcus (white oaks) no bristle tips on leaf lobes inner surface of acorn shell is glabrous, seed sweet, acorns mature in one season whiteish-brown wood, tyloses found in xylem vessels
Lobatae (Red and Black Oaks) Bristle tips on leaf lobes, teeth, or apex inner surface of acorn shell tomentose, seed bitter, acorns usually mature in two seasons NO tyloses extremely bitter fruit that is very difficult to get out
Quercus lyrata Overcup Oak cup covering more than 75% of acorn leaves with deep lobes toward apex pubescent underneath bark is shaggy straight
Quercus alba White Oak usually more than 7 lobes generally evenly distributed, glabrous underneath lots of variation in leaf morphology - not the best to use to differentiate between species cup covers less than 75% of acorn
Quercus stellata Post Oak trunk is very straigh middle lobes are wider to give the appearance of a cross -top of leaf is glossy, dark green and underside has a hairy feel to it
Quercus pridoides Dwarf Chestnut Oak rounded to almost pointed teeth that go all the way around it looks very shrubby rather than tree like
Quercus muehlenbergii Chinkapin Oak it has more points than roundness
