Science Quiz 10/4
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Motion | The change in an objects position |
| Position | Is the location of an object |
| Reference point | a single point, stationary spot, that an objects distance can be measured to, can be a starting point |
| Speed | is the distance traveled by an object in a certain amount of time |
| Velocity | is the speed and direction an object is moving |
| Acceleration | a change in the direction of a moving object or an increase or decrease in speed |
| Reference frame | is a system that uses coordinates or background objects to establish position or measure movement of a point in space |
| Direction | amount of space between two objects, points, lines |
| Displacement | change In positions= of an object determined by the distance and direction of its ending point from its starting point |
| Force | a push or a pull |
| what is force measured in? | Newton (N) |
| magnitude | the strength of the force, or how much force there is. |
| Balanced Forces | Forces acting on an object in opposite directions and equal strength. result of Net Force=0. No change in motion. the object is either not moving, or it moving at a constant speed. |
| Unbalanced Forces | resultant or net forces are NOT equal. they always cause the motion of t=an object to change the speed and/or direction that it is moving. |
| Friction | a force that occurs when one object rubs against another object. the force that tact's to resist sliding between 2 surfaces |
| Air resistance | is a type of frictional force, that works against the moving object to slow it down (opposite) |
