Water Properties

TermDefinition
polar a molecule with unequal distribution of charges (a slight positive end and a slight negative end)
hydrogen bond Attraction between the slightly positive end of one water molecule and a slightly negative end of a different water molecule
cohesion Two of the same substance sticking together. (ex. Water molecules sticking to each other.)
adhesion Two different substances sticking to each other. (Ex. Water molecules sticking to other surfaces.)
surface tension The "skin-like" appearance of water at the surface, due to cohesion and hydrogen bonds.
Heat capacity (high specific heat) takes a lot of energy (heat) to change the temperature of water
solution A mixture that forms when one substance dissolves another.
universal solvent water can dissolve many substances.
solvent A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances (does the dissolving)
solute the substance that is dissolved (you put in)
nonpolar molecules without any charge
capillary action the rise of a liquid when in contact with a solid (due to cohesion and adhesion)
Polar solutes dissolve in _____ solvents polar
nonpolar solutes dissolve in ______solvents nonpolar
Which takes up more space, ice or water? ice
Which is more dense, ice or water? water
pH measure of how acidic / basic something is
pH higher than 7 base
pH less than 7 acid
pH equal to 7 neutral

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
