vocabulary words found in Lab-Aids Ecology Unit

| ecology | the study of relationships between living organisms and between organisms and the physical environment |
| introduced species | nonnative species deliberately or accidentally introduced into a new habitat |
| invasive species | An introduced species that causes or has the ability to harm the environment or people |
| native species | Species that normally live and thrive in a particular ecosystem |
| transect | The specific path or area, often marked with a rope or measuring tape showing where data should be collected. |
| quadrat | A square or rectangular plot of land marked off to determine their samples |
| biotic factors | All the living organisms that inhabit an ecosystem |
| abiotic factors | nonliving parts of an ecosystem |
| habitat | a location in the environment where an organism lives |
| population | A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area |
| range | the total area where a species lives |
| ecosystem | all the living and nonliving components in an environment and their interactions |
| prairie | a large, level area of grassland with few or no trees |
| ecologist | a biologist who studies the relation between organisms and their environment |
| biodiversity | the variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem. |
| trade-off | the act of giving up one benefit in order to gain another, greater benefit |
| predator | An animal that hunts other animals for food |
