Cell Theory/Microsco
Cell Theory & Microscopes
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Cells | The basic unit of structure and function in living things. |
| Cells can be: | Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic |
| Prokaryotic | Do not have structures surrounded by membranes (no nucleus). Few internal structures. Ex.: One-celled organisms, Bacteria |
| Eukaryotic | Contain organelles surrounded by membranes (have nucleus). Most living organisms. Ex.: Plants and Animals |
| Cell Function: Cells are responsible for completing the following tasks: | 1. Obtaining energy 2. Bringing in nutrients 3. Getting rid of wastes 4. Work together with other cells to help the organism stay alive, grow, and reproduce |
| The Cell Theory | 1. All living things are made of cells 2. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things 3. All new cells are produced from existing cells |
| The Cell Theory: The invention of the microscope in the mid 1600's allowed scientists to | conclude that living organisms are made of cells. |
| The Cell Theory | is a widely accepted explanation of the relationship between cells and living things. |
| The Microscope | -Makes objects appear larger than they actually are, all microscopes magnify and resolve |
| Types of microscopes | Light & Electron |
| Light Microscopes | focus light through lenses to produce a magnified image |
| Electron Microscopes | use beams of electrons to scan the surface of the specimen |
