Q1 science test

review for 9 week test

QuestionAnswer
What is science? The process of learning about the natural world through observation and experimentation.
Who can be a scientists? Anybody can be a scientist.
What is an observation vs an inference? an observation is the information we gain from our five senses. An inference is a statement we make based on an interpretation or facts or observations.
what do scientist do? Scientist create stuff do experiments, make observations, collect data, ask questions, and a lot more.
What is the scientific method? the scientific methed is the process you go through when doing an experiment.
What are the steps to the scientific method in order? The steps are problem, hypothesis, procedure, data/results, and conclusion.
What is a hypothesis? it is an educated guess or statement about what is going to happen.
What is a variable? a variable is what you are testing or something that is controlled
What is the difference between the Independent variable, Dependent variable, and Controlled variable? The controlled variable is what we keep the same. the independent variable is what we purposefully change to test. the dependent is the response we are measuring
what do you put on before every lab? you put on googles.
What do you do when chemicals get on you or there is an accident? You tell the teacher as fast as you can.
True/false: You need to know where the safety shower ,eye wash station, etc.. True
When do we use a safety shower, eye wash, fire extinguisher, fire blanket? You use these items when in an emergency
When do we use a beaker, test tube, tongs, flask, Bunsen burner, and goggles? You use these for an experiment.
What tool do we use to measure the volume of a liquid? What unit is volume? We use a beaker an volume is in the milliliter unit.
How do we measure the volume of a marble? you measure it with a triple beam balance.
What tool do we use to measure the mass of an object? What unit is mass? We use a electronic scale. The unit of mass is meter
How do we measure the mass of an object that cannot be placed directly on the tray (marble)? We measure it by putting the marbles in aa container and measure it on a triple beam balance then dup out the marbles and measure the container and then with the two weights you subtract them.
What tool would we want to use very tiny things we can’t see we just our eyes like cells? We use a microscope to look at tiny cells and other things.
How do we calculate density from mass and volume. mass divide by volume
What is the metric unit for length, time, mass, and volume? the metric unit is gram and letter
Which lab safety rule is the most important and why? The most important is follow the teachers instructions.
What is gravity? Gravity is a force of attraction between two objects.
What determines the strength of the force of gravity? The mass of an object determines the force of gravity on an object.
What are the time units ordered by size year, mouth, day, hour, minute ,and second
What is the difference between rotation and revolution? rotation is the movement of an object around a fixed object. revolution is the movement of one object in a circular path around a second object.
What causes day and night? The revolution of the earth is what causes day and night.
What causes a year? The rotation of the earth causes a year.
What causes the moon phases? The moons revolution causes the moon phases.
What causes the tides? The rotation of the moon.
What causes a leap year? A year is 365 and 1/4 days so every 4 years the 1/4 equals a day so we add a day in February. Which equals a leap year.
How do you read a thermometer you read the read or blue line
How do you read a triple beam balance you read the hundreds tens and one then add them up
How do you read a graduated cylinder you look at it eye level and read the meniscus
be able to convert between metric system kilometer=meter gram=centigram
be able to understand the positions of the sun, moon, and earth and how they rotate and revolve around each other.
