Biology- Unit 1

biomacromolecules and water study guide

QuestionAnswer
What is the monomer of a lipid called? Glycerol and Fatty acids
What is the polymer of lipid called? Phospholipids and Triglycerides
What is unique about the structure of a lipid compared to the three other biomacromolecules? (what does this structure have that the others don't? How can we tell it apart?) Fatty acid tails
What is the main role of lipids in the body? Long term source of energy for the cell
What is the monomer of a carbohydrate called? Monosaccharide
What is the polymer of a carbohydrate called? Polysaccharide
What is unique about the structure of a carbohydrate compared to the three other biomacromolecules? (What does this structure have that the others don't? How can we tell it apart? ) Made of carbon ring structures
What is the main role of carbohydrates in the body? Quick source of energy
What is a monomer of a protein called? Amino Acid
What is the polymer of a protein called? Polypeptide chain
What is unique about the structure of a protein compared to the three other biomacromolecules? ( What does this structure have that the others don't? How can we tell it apart? ) Amino acid monomers
What is the main role of proteins in the body? Supply material for growth, maintenance, and repair in the body
What is the monomer of a nucleic acid called? Nucleotide
What is the polymer of a nucleic acid called? DNA or RNA strand
What is unique about the structure of a nucleic acid compared to the three other biomacromolecules? ( What does this structure have that the others don't? How can we tell it apart? ) They are made up of many nucleotides bound together
What is the main role of nucleic acids in the body? Carry genetic information
Explain why water density is essential for maintaining life on Earth. Keeps water from freezing solid and allows life to continue to thrive under the icy surface
Explain why cohesion/adhesion is essential for maintaining life on Earth. Water sticks to itself/other molecules to help plant life and allows many functions in the body to occur
Explain why specific heat is essential for maintaining life on Earth. Water absorbs and releases heat slowly which allows for moderation of Earth's climate and helps organisms regulate their body
What happens to a cell in a hypotonic solution? The solute concentration is higher inside the cell so water particles rush into the cell. The cell swells and bursts.
What happens to a cell in a hypertonic solution? The solute concentration outside the cell is higher so water particles rush out of the cell. The cell shrivels up and dies.
What happens to a cell in an isotonic solution? The concentration of water particles in and around the cell is at equilibrium. Particles can come and go freely. This is a normal cell function.
Bonus: Define any vocab word you can remember {MUST BE DIFFERENT EVERY TIME}

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
