Science Lesson 3.2
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Nonvascular Plant | Plants that lack vascular tissue for transporting materials are known as nonvascular plants. |
Rhizoid | Rhizoids are thin, rootlike structures that anchor mosses and absorb water and nutrients. |
Vascular Plant | Vascular plants are plants with true vascular tissue. |
Phloem | Phloem is the vascular tissue through which food moves. |
Xylem | Xylem is the vascular tissue through which water and nutrients move. |
Pollen | Seed plants produce pollen, which are tiny structures that contain the cells that will later become sperm cells. |
Seed | A seed is a structure that contains a young plant inside a protective covering. |
Gymnosperm | A gymnosperm is a seed plant that produces naked seeds. The seeds of gymnosperms are referred to as "naked" because they are not enclosed by a protective fruit. |
Angiosperm | Angiosperms are seed plants that produce flowers and, in contrast to gymnosperms, they produce seeds that are enclosed in fruits. |
How are Plants Classified? | Plants are classified into nonvascular, vascular, vascular seedless, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. |
What is the Difference between Phloem and Xylem? | Food moves through the phloem, but water and nutrients move through the xylem. |
