Science Lesson 3.2

TermDefinition
Nonvascular Plant Plants that lack vascular tissue for transporting materials are known as nonvascular plants.
Rhizoid Rhizoids are thin, rootlike structures that anchor mosses and absorb water and nutrients.
Vascular Plant Vascular plants are plants with true vascular tissue.
Phloem Phloem is the vascular tissue through which food moves.
Xylem Xylem is the vascular tissue through which water and nutrients move.
Pollen Seed plants produce pollen, which are tiny structures that contain the cells that will later become sperm cells.
Seed A seed is a structure that contains a young plant inside a protective covering.
Gymnosperm A gymnosperm is a seed plant that produces naked seeds. The seeds of gymnosperms are referred to as "naked" because they are not enclosed by a protective fruit.
Angiosperm Angiosperms are seed plants that produce flowers and, in contrast to gymnosperms, they produce seeds that are enclosed in fruits.
How are Plants Classified? Plants are classified into nonvascular, vascular, vascular seedless, gymnosperms, and angiosperms.
What is the Difference between Phloem and Xylem? Food moves through the phloem, but water and nutrients move through the xylem.
