Scientific method (EPISD 8th grade)

Scientific method A systematic and controlled way of studying questions
Question The very beginning of a scientific investigation
Hypothesis A testable idea
Research Finding out what has already been discovered about the topic of investigation
Experiment Steps taken to test a hypothesis
Analysis Trying to decide what your data shows
Recording Writing down of observations
Inference Based on facts but not a direct observation
Conclusion Answers the hypothesis
Independent variable The variable that is manipulated
Dependent variable The variable that is responding and therefore measured
Controls The factors in an experiment that don’t change
Observation Something that can be described using your senses
Field investigation An experiment preformed outside of a laboratory
Laboratory investigation An experiment preformed in a very controlled environment
Theory A concept that explain a set of tested observations
Testable Something that can be checked and shown to be true of false
Repeatable When an experiment can be copied or duplicated
Equipment The supplies that are needed to perform an experiment
