| artificial selection | selection by humans for breeding of useful traits from the natural variation among different organisms; selective breeding |
| Chromosomes | a threadlike structure made of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell |
| Dominant | a trait that covers over another form of that trait. |
| Embryos | organisms at early stages of development |
| Evolution | change in the genetics of an organism over time. |
| genes | a sequence of DNA on a chromosome |
| Genome | a full set of inheritable chromosomes |
| Mutation | a change or error in a gene |
| natural selection | process in which individuals that have traits that are beneficial in the environment tend to survive and reproduce more successfully. |
| Recessive | a trait that is covered up by another form of that trait and seems to disappear. |
| Traits | a characteristic that an organism can pass on to its offspring through its genes. |
