Living Organisms
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the characteristics of living things? | Made of cells Contain similar chemicals & use energy Respond to stimuli/surroundings Grow, develop & reproduce |
| What are cells? | Cells are a basic unit of structure and function in living things |
| What is unicellular? | single celled organism one cell carries out the function necessary to stay alive |
| What is multicellular? | Organisms consisting of many cells |
| They Obtain and Use Resources For Energy | All organisms need food, oxygen, and water. Provides required energy to perform basic life functions (growing / developing / repairing, etc.) |
| Autotroph/Producers | Make their own food through photosynthesis |
| Heterotroph/Consumers- | Find their food (eat) |
| Stimulus | a change in an organism’s surroundings that will cause the organism to react |
| Examples of stimulus | Temperature Light Sound Water Space Food |
| Response | the reaction to the stimulus; it can be an action or a behavior performed by the organism |
| Growth | is the process whereby the organism becomes larger (height/ mass/ overall size). |
| Development | results in the organism becoming more complex structurally. |
| Organisms | require energy to grow and develop. |
| Reproduction: Organisms have the ability to | reproduce, or produce offspring that have similar characteristics as the parent. |
| Types of reproduction: | Asexual and Sexual |
| Asexual | one parent that produces offspring identical to the parent |
| Sexual | process involving two parents. The egg (female reproductive cell) and sperm (male reproductive cell) from these two parents combine to make an offspring that has characteristics of both parents. |
