Crash Course Tissues #2 (epithelial)
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is the job of epithelial tissue? | It lines, covers, & generally organizes your body, creating order from what would be chaos |
| Proper epithelium definition | Covers & lines your outer & inner body & organizes everything into separate units |
| Glandular epithelium definition | Forms glands & secretes hormones & other substances |
| Invagination definition | The action or process of being turned inside out or folded back on itself to form a cavity or a pouch |
| Avascular definition | Not associated with or supplied with blood vessels |
| Jobs of squamous cells | Absorption, secretion, filtration, protection, transportation, & diffusion |
| Jobs of cuboidal cells | Absorption, protection, & secretions |
| Jobs of columnar Cells | Protection & secretion |
| Why are squamous cells flat? | It makes it easier for oxygen to move across them & to the other side |
| Why are columnar & cuboidal cells so large? | It takes a lot of room to make & secrete mucus |
| Pseudostratified description | Mostly one layer of cells, but the cells are different shapes, types, & sizes |
| Does epithelial tissue regenerate quickly? | Yes |
| Apical definition | Upper side of a tissue, exposed to either the outside of the body or the outside of whatever organ it’s covering |
| Basal definition | Tightly attached to the basement membrane, never opens to outside world |
| Basement membrane definition | Collagen fibers that helps hold the epithelium together, & anchors it to the next deeper layer, your connective tissues |
| Glands are largely made up of what? | Epithelial tissue; that’s why our glands secrete sweat, mucus, hormones, & enzymes |
| What are the 2 types of glandular epithelium? | Endocrine & exocrine glands |
| Endocrine gland definition | They secrete hormones right into your bloodstream out to nearby cells |
| Exocrine gland definition | They secrete their juices into tubes or ducts that lead to the outside of your body, rather than into the blood |
| Are epithelial tissues polar or non-polar? | Polar, meaning that there are a sides; apical & basal |
