The Restless Oceans

Prentice Hall Physical Science: Section 23.5

QuestionAnswer
What is salinity? the proportion of dissolved salts in water
Describe ocean salinity Averages about 35grams of dissolved salts for each kilogram of water
Explain the meaning of continental shelf gently sloping plain that forms an apron of shallow water along the edges of most continents
What is a surface current? continuously flowing water on top of the ocean that is created due to winds blowing over the area directly above the ocean
Explain density current Ocean currents that are caused by differences in the ocean due to temperatures and/or salinity levels. These kinds of currents are responsible for slow mixing of the water between the surface and deeper ocean.
Describe what happens in an upwelling movement of cooler water from the deep ocean to the surface; occurs when winds push warmer surface water aside allowing cooler water to flow up.
Explain how hydraulic action changes the landscape Waves fill cracks with water and before the water can exit the crack more waves force more water in the crack. More pressure increases the erosional effect and breaks down the rock.
What is longshore drift? the process where short waves and currents move sand futher down the beach. It usually produces a zigzag pattern in the sand.
