Scientific Method

TermDefinition
Scientific Method the process scientists use to solve problems and answer questions
observation using your 5 senses to describe the world around you
inference a possible explanation to your observations
hypothesis a possible answer to the question you are testing (predicting what will happen in the experiment)
Experiment a series of steps (procedure) you use to test your hypothesis
Independent Variable The one factor you change in an experiment
Dependent Variable The factor that changes as a result of the independent variable (what you are measuring)
Control variables All the factors you keep the same in an experiment
Data The observations and measurements you collect from an experiment
Conclusion A summary of your findings (what you learned from the experiment)
Qualitative Observation An observation made using one or more of your five senses
Quantitative Observation An observation made using counting or measurements
