soils week 3

QuestionAnswer
How does tilling impact soil overtime you'll see loss in productivity - soil loss - erosion - crusting of A horizon
What are some advantages of not tilling - retain organic matter - less work than tilling - doesn't expose top soil to crusting which would flood the topsoil
Particle density mass per unit volume of the soil (grams cm3) - not affected by pore space ex. organic matter will be low (denser)
Bulk density mass of a unit volume of dry soil - mass grams over cm3 -mass is the weight of the dry soil - when soil is compacted there is less pore space meaning density goes up
Pore space - macropores allow for water and root penetration -packing/interped/biopores - larger enough for plant roots - air and water can move easily through
Interped pores Cracks allow for water/root penetrations
Biopores Penetrating roots that die and leave the space
Pore space - micropores - air movement is slow - often filled with water - very small pore may have water that plants cannot access
Soil consistence ease with which a soil can be reshaped or ruptured
Soil consistency how well a soil resists penetration
Pedon 1-10m2 - smallest sampling unit (lateral 1-3.5, deep 1-2m) - group of similar pedons is a polypedon
when is a soil a soil - naturally occuring - unconsolidated mineral or organic material (compacted or cemented) - min 10cm thick - on earth surface + less than 60 cm of water covering - can support vegetation - layer of material more than 50cm covering than buried soil
Regosolic order (entisols) - no recognizable B horizon greater than 5cm thick - may have organic horizons -associated with recent mass wasting or deposition - can occur where material is resistant to weathering
what might result in a little to no B horizon - not enough time/ preventing something from changing (slopes/dry/cold/quartz) - Youthfulness, unstable material - recent alluvium
Humid Regosol - Ah - enriched with organics, 17% or less carbon by weight - dark coloured Ap – disturbed by humans
Orthic regosol - Ah – at least 10 cm thick - Low organic matter
What brought the material here?

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
