Figurative language | language not intended to be taken literally but layered with meaning through the use of imagery, metaphors, and other literary devices |
Imagery | the use of language to create mental images and sensory impressions. Imagery can be used for emotional effect and to intensify the impact on the reader |
Prefix | one or more letters placed before a root or base word that changes the meaning of the word |
Suffix | one or more letters placed after a root or base word that changes the meaning of a word |
Root | the basic form of a word without any affixes |
Sound device | a device used by authors to create meaning through sound and help readers develop visual images |
Voice | articulation or expression in coherent form, either verbally or in a piece of writing |
Word choice | the author’s thoughtful use of precise vocabulary to fully convey meaning to the reader |
Word origin | the initial place(s) and historical era(s) a word was derived and developed |
Comparative | the form of an adjective (or adverb) used to compare two or more things (or actions) |
Superlative | an adjective indicating the greatest (or least) degree of something |
