Cell Transport
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Hypertonic | Referring to a solution that is more concentrated than another |
| Aquaporin | Protein that makes up channels for the passage of water |
| Hypotonic | Referring to a solution that is less concentrated than another |
| Isotonic | Referring to a solution that has the same concentration as another |
| Exocytosis | Release of material outside the cell via fusion of a vacuole or vesicle with the cell membrane |
| Diffusion | Random movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration |
| Endocytosis | Process of taking material into the cell via infolding of the plasma membrane |
| Osmosis | Diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane |
| Active transport | Energy-requiring movement of materials against a concentration gradient |
| Semi-permeable | Allowing passage of certain substances while preventing the passage of others |
| Facilitated diffusion | Passage through a protein channel that does not require energy |
| Receptor | Protein that binds to signalling molecules and transmit a signal |
| Passive transport | Non-energy-requiring movement of materials along a concentration gradient |
| Phagocytosis | form of bulk transport in which materials are engulfed by amoebae and certain white blood cells |
