atom The smallest part of an element that has the same properties
atomic theory The idea that everything is made of small particles (atoms)
compound Matter that is made of two or more elements
molecule The smallest particle of a compound that has the same properties
particle A word that is sometimes used in place of atoms
element Made up of only one kind of atom
nucleus Found at the center of an atom; made of protons and neutrons
proton Found around the nucleus; has a positive charge
neutron Found in the nucleus; has a neutral charge (no charge)
electron Found around the nucleus; has a negative charge
Salt (NaCl) 1 sodium atom and 1 chlorine atom
Water (H2O) 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atoms
Hydrogen Peroxide H2 O2 2 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms
periodic table a way of organizing the elements in a table by atomic number
