| atom | The smallest part of an element that has the same properties |
| atomic theory | The idea that everything is made of small particles (atoms) |
| compound | Matter that is made of two or more elements |
| molecule | The smallest particle of a compound that has the same properties |
| particle | A word that is sometimes used in place of atoms |
| element | Made up of only one kind of atom |
| nucleus | Found at the center of an atom; made of protons and neutrons |
| proton | Found around the nucleus; has a positive charge |
| neutron | Found in the nucleus; has a neutral charge (no charge) |
| electron | Found around the nucleus; has a negative charge |
| Salt (NaCl) | 1 sodium atom and 1 chlorine atom |
| Water (H2O) | 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atoms |
| Hydrogen Peroxide H2 O2 | 2 hydrogen atoms and 2 oxygen atoms |
| periodic table | a way of organizing the elements in a table by atomic number |
| matter | anything that has weight and takes up space |
| conclude | to make a statement with data and facts. |
