| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| chemical reaction | the process in which atoms are rearranged by breaking bonds and forming new bonds to produce new substances. |
| chemical formula | the description that includes the chemical symbols of elements and numbers to describe the type and number of atoms in a substance. |
| chemical equation | the description of a chemical reaction that shows the initial reacting substances and the final products, the resulting substance. |
| Reactants | substances that participate in a chemical reaction, the starting substances |
| products | substances that are formed during a chemical reaction, the resulting substances. |
| yield sign | the arrow connecting the reactants pointing toward the products of a chemical reaction |
| law of conservation of mass | matter cannot be created nor destroyed in ordinary physical and chemical changes |
| balanced equation | the rule that the numbers and types of atoms on one side on a chemical equation must equal the types and numbers of atoms on the other side of the equation |
| coefficient | the number placed in front of a chemical formula that indicates the amount of the chemical formula present |
| endothermic reaction | a chemical reaction that requires the input of energy |
| exothermic reaction | a chemical reaction during which energy is released |
| law of conservation of energy | the law that states energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms |
| physical change | a change that affects one or more physical properties of a substance |
| chemical change | a change when one or more substances change into entirely new substances with different properties |
| chemical properties | characteristics of an atom or substance that describe which chemical changes can or cannot happen to that substance. |
| precipitate | a solid that results from a chemical reaction between two liquids |
| law of conservation of mass | the law stating that mass cannot be created or destroyed but is only transformed into different substances. |
| gas formation | bubbles and foam that form when two substances chemically react. |
| temperature change | an increase or decrease in temperature when two substances chemically react. |
| color change | a change of color not due to dilution that results when two substances chemically react. |
