| nonliving | referring to something that has never been alive |
| living | the condition of life |
| habitat | place where an organism lives |
| dead | no longer alive |
| dormant | inactive, in a state of suspension |

| Body Tube | A hollow tube that holds the eyepiece lens and/or mirrors |
| Nosepiece | Holds the objectives and can be rotated to change the magnification |
| Middle Objective Lens | The one with a power of 10x |
| Low Objective Lens | The one with a power of 4x - smallest one |
| High Objective Lens | The one with a power of 40x - the largest one |
| Stage Clips | These hold the slide in place |
| Diaphragm | Located under the stage, this controls how much light shines through the stage to illuminate the specimen |
| Light source | This provides the light that shines through the slide |
| Eyepiece | The part you look through - has a 10x lens in it |
| Arm | Supports the body tube and makes a good handle for carrying the microscope |
| Stage | The place where you put the slide for viewing |
| Coarse Adjustment | the knob used for finding stuff under low power - moves the stage up and down. |
| Fine Adjustment | Knob used for high-power focusing |
| Base | This supports the weight of the microscope |
| Microscope | An instrument that makes small objects look larger |
| Scale | the proportional size of a magnified image compared to the original |
| power | The magnification associated with each objective lens |
| field of view | The area visible through the microscope eyepiece |
