| Term | Definition |

| Thermal Energy | The sum of the kinetic energy and the potential energy of the particles that make up the object. |
| Energy | Ability to do work, which is the ability to exert a force causing displacement of an object. |
| Convection | The movement caused within a fluid by the tendency of hotter and therefore less dense material to rise, and colder, denser material to sink under the influence of gravity , which consequently results in transfer of heat. |
| Jet Stream | A fast, narrow current of air flowing from west to east that encircles the globe. |
| Coriolis Effect | The deflection of an object moving on or near the surface caused by the planet's spin. |
| Global Winds | Winds that occur in belts that go all around the planet. |
| Trade Winds | The wind that flows towards the equator from the north-east in the Northern Hemisphere or from the south-east in Southern Hemisphere. |
| Westerlies | The prevailing winds blowing from the west on the poleward sides of the hoarse latitudes, often bringing depressions and anticyclones. |
| Polar Easterlies | The dry, cold prevailing winds that blow around the high-pressure areas of the polar highs at the North and south poles. |
| Doldrums | The belt around the Earth near the equator where sailing ships sometimes get stuck on windless waters. |
| Horse Latitudes | Subtropical regions known for calm winds and little precipitation. |
| Local Wind Patterns | Air that flows over a smaller area of the Earth due to differences in air pressure. |
| SeaBreeze | A local wind system characterized by a flow from sea to land during the day. |
| Land Breeze | A local wind system characterized by a flow from land to water late at night. |
| Atmosphere | A layer of gas and suspended solids extending from the Earths surface up many thousands of miles. |
